Little Einsteins!

Well, I needed something to do with the little monsters this morning to keep them entertained for a while. So I decided to introduce a lesson about states of matter. Yes, I know they are only 2 years old, but I figured it's never too early to start on the road to science. So we borrowed an idea I've seen in the child care center and combined cornstarch and water. This "goop" (as Emma & TJ called it) is really neat stuff! It's hard to mix because the solids sink to the bottom and the milky liquid floats on top. But, if you can scoop up a handful of it, you will see it switch between liquid and solid state right before your eyes. As you squeeze, it becomes a solid powder in your palm. But when you open your hand it liquifies again and drips back through your fingers. So neat! Then we took a bunch of plastic "jewels" and dropped them into the goop to see which would float and which ones would sink. A lesson in density and buoyancy anyone? Plus then the kids could search through the goop to find their treasure. Emma, and even TJ, really enjoyed playing with this goop for quite a while this morning. And maybe they even learned a little something too. :)
